Indonesia is the world’s most generous country for the seventh year running, according to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index 2024. CAF surveyed 145,000 people across over 140 countries last year and the originator of structured philanthropy, the United States ranks #6.

The survey asked respondents 3 questions about what they had done in the last month:

  1. Have you donated money to charity?
  2. Have you helped a stranger or someone you didn’t know who needed help?
  3. Have you volunteered your time to an organization?

Ironically, the United Kingdom has fallen out of the top 20 largely because of economic difficulties. Interestingly, smaller countries like Morocco increased their giving by 800% following earthquakes in 2023. The World Giving Index adds that 4.3 billion people worldwide (73%) gave their money, time or helped someone they didn’t know in 2023.
