• Make sure that the lawyer has valid qualifications and is licensed to practice in your state. Check public records to make sure that there is no disciplinary action against them. At least two lawyers I had hired left the profession abruptly and I had to find new ones.
  • Don’t be intimidated by their high rise offices and demeanor. You are hiring them and you can fire them.
  • Read the fine print before signing any agreements with a lawyer. Read it thoroughly and do not be afraid to clarify any doubts. Remember you are paying them and you have every right to make sure that the deal is fair.
  • Ask and make sure that they have a good record keeping system. There are horror stories of lawyers losing documents, further delaying your processing.
  • Don’t trust aggressive and pushy “Internet” lawyers who promote buy one get one free schemes and give you false promises. You must have the patience of an Indian saint to get a Green Card in this country. So, choose the ones you can trust and will fight for your rights.
  • Check the American Immigration Lawyers Association website for updates on law.
  • Rely on government sources, especially USCIS and other credible authorities for information and updates. Don’t fall prey to Reddit, Quora and other forums and waste your precious time. It is what it is and is not in your control or your attorney’s control.
  • Make sure you give precise documents on time and if you don’t have something, don’t worry. For instance I didn’t have a birth certificate as Municipalities in India did not start issuing birth certificates until 1974. So, I had to provide alternate documentation based on USCIS criteria.
  • Don’t hire glorified grant writers who push government documents and take your money. Trust me, there are plenty of them around!
  • If your company is filing for you, trust your HR folks and leave it up to them. Don’t meddle and don’t go in between.
