Isn’t fundraising uplifting?

Here’s an excerpt from Advancing Philanthropy. May/June 2011 based on an interview with John G. Davies, President and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation

First, the uplifting statement.
“It is our job to evoke a response that allows people to do things beyond their realm to help people on the margins of society and improve society for those who struggle to survive. We are involved in an inspirational activity to move people to do things that are selfless in a world that’s increasingly selfish.”

Second, a cautionary tale.
“As fundraisers we are happy to accept gifts but slow to give reports back to donors, especially individual donors.”

Finally, here’s the moral of the story: Take care of your existing donors before you go on a fishing expedition!
